14 First-Rate Things to Experience in Tokyo
1 | Ginza

Ginza is one of the most luxurious sections of Tokyo. Walk around and marvel at ritzy stores like Chanel and Louis Vuitton that are architectural and artistic masterpieces. Go around sunset or at night if you can. Pairs well with Yamato Teppanyaki for dinner, Star Bar for drinks, and Cafe de l’Ambre for coffee.
2 | Shibuya Crossing

The busiest intersection in the world with millions crossing daily is quite the scene. Pairs well with Tokyo Kenkyo for lunch, Bunkamura museum (see #7 of this list), Yoyogi Park (see #9), and Nonbei Yokocho for a night out.
3 | Akihabara

Get lost in the technology/electronics district! Pairs well with THE best ramen at Karashibi Miso Ramen Kikanbo.
4 | The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace

I adore the Tokagakudo music hall from the ’60’s within the gardens (pictured here). The East Gardens also have beautiful views of the city skyline.

Shimokita is known for its endless vintage stores, which are highly selective and proffer genuinely beautiful items. A favorite find is the periwinkle sheer lace-trimmed robe pictured above. Pairs well with Nasu Oyaji Curry for lunch/dinner.
7 | Bunkamura The Museum

This spot has rotating exhibits and, when I went, it boasted a small but impressive gallery of Impressionist art on loan from a prestigious Scotland museum.
8 | Harajuku

Walk down the famous Takeshita Street for the Harajuku girls and wonderful costume stores—my favorite is Takenoko. After that’s out of your system, stroll around all of Harajuku especially for its boutique (and chain like Opening Ceremony) stores and their special storefronts. The last time I was in Tokyo, I walked over 65 miles and it reconfirmed what I already believed—no one pays attention to detail as consistently and ingeniously/beautifully as the Japanese. The details sprinkled throughout the alleyways in Harajuku have my heart. Pairs well with UA Bar for drinks, Deus Ex Machina Cafe for coffee, and the Tokyo Plaza Omotesando (#12) for kaleidoscope mirrors and a free rooftop.
9 | Yoyogi Park

Visit for the towering trees, famous sake wall, and the Meiji Shrine. It’s especially good on a Sunday when everyone—families, couples, friends—are hanging out and filling the park. Reminded me of Hyde Park on a Sunday for any Londoners.
10 | Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building

Key word FREE observation floor. Pairs well with Golden Gai for a night out or Ben Fiddich or Yata for a calmer drink. Regardless, exploring the Shinjuku area at night is a must.
11 | Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum

I went for the Gustav Klimt special exhibition and it was one of the best exhibitions I’ve seen. Added bonus of wandering through the beautiful Ueno-Park to get here. Check in with whatever special exhibitions are current.

Go for the kaleidoscope of mirrors that is its entrance and for the free and spacious rooftop with sweeping views.

I confess I have not been for lack of time, but just about everyone recommends giving this other-worldly show a try.

The Japanese love their baseball and YOU CAN BRING YOUR OWN BEER…
